I
began in 1971 as a maker of thrown domestic ware in my free time,
and became a full time potter in 1990 when I added handbuilt sawdust
fired pots to my range. In 1999 I extended this exploring with clay
to high fired matt glazed abstract sculptures. I was coming back
to the beginning as I had wanted to be a sculptor in 1966 at the
West of England College of Art, but my approach did not fit the
college curriculum so I was pushed into painting and etching where
I gained a 2:1.
I have now stopped making domestic ware completely, and only occasionally
work in clay in order to give time and space to make abstract sculpture
in many other materials
This is serious
play, following my whims, discovering what materials will and won’t
do, and driven by the desire to express my spirit.
When being a
potter I knew where I was going and what to expect at the end of
the day, now anything is possible and the old ‘protestant
work ethic’ is feeling un-nerved. Fortunately my stability
rests in my membership of Subud (see Links)
